Why do we worry?

Worrying is a very common human emotion. It's our mind warning us about something negative that is about to happen. It brings up everything that we are afraid of to surface and starts to make us nervous. The restless sensation that we get from worrying is real and it is really happening to our body. We lose focus, our heart starts beating faster and we sweat and start to walk up and down to start with.

Everyone experiences worry at a different levels. Some experience it mildly, and some are chronic worriers. Of course, chronic worrying is a disease and is capable of paralyzing a person from functioning daily normal activities.

Is it going to happen the way we think? No, almost never. Nothing happens the way we think. I'm sure that you have experienced it some how in your life, and if not, remind yourself the next time you are worried about something.

How do I manage my worries?

Meditation has helped me tremendously to manage my worries. I used to wake up in the middle of the night and think about so many things... one topic to the next... from what if my car breaks down, to what if I collapse in the middle of the street, to how can I make my rent the next month. These are normal things that all of us worry about. When I was responsible for my business and my employees, I worried even more.

The other day, I was worried about not being good enough communicator. Very shortly, I dismissed my thoughts as a baseless self doubt. I reassured myself that without practice, without mistakes and without putting in the efforts, no one has reached mastery. In order for me to become a better communicator, I would have to put in the work and forget about being perfect. And, that is exactly what I am doing now.

With meditation, I was able to relax and understand the fact that my mind is not to order me around and make me nervous whenever it wants to. I became the controller of my mind. If thoughts come across as negative - especially if they are from the past or in the future - I am able to dismiss it as not an immediate matter and put it aside. Now, I am more aware of what's crossing my mind at the current moment and change it if I did not like it.

Now, when I wake up in the middle of the night with a worry of some kind on my mind, I tell myself to go back to sleep and don't waste time with the nonsense of your mind which is not real and will not become a reality. Instead I close my eyes and consciously take all the negative thoughts out of my mind and visualize being in my happy place.

Worrying is a mind game?

Worry is your mind game. It is our natural emotion to warn us about the things that has not happened yet. Worry is negative emotion that lives in the future. We usually make ourselves feel scared about what if.... what if this happens; what if that happens, what if he says no, or what if she says yes.... None of this is real. When catch yourself worrying about anything, remember that it's your mind playing tricks on you to keep you preoccupied. Don't let your mind to take control of your life and your emotions. Let your heart guide you instead.

Three ways to stop worrying

  1. The first thing you can do is to tell your mind to STOP. Stop taking control of my thoughts and my body. Nothing bad will happen because you have faith, and instead you can think about all the good scenarios as an outcome.
  2. The second thing is to get physically active. Physical activities will take your mind off and puts it on your action. Go for a walk, take a shower, listen to nice music, watch your favorite TV show, read, cook, clean, garden. Do whatever you enjoy to do to take your mind off of the subject that makes you worry.
  3. The third thing that you can do is to do something about it if you have any control over it. If you are worried about your health, see a doctor, if you are worried about your children or spouse coming late after work, call around, or hop on your car and drive around. It may be helpful if you take an action to alleviate your worries.
