Recently, I read one of Suze Orman’s articles, Six Smart Steps for Financial Security. While I agree with her tips for living a balanced and purposeful life, the words ‘financial security’ made me stop to consider one question, do we really have financial security?
Here are Suze Orman’s Six Smart Steps:
- Pay as you go
- Pay yourself first
- Boost your retirement savings rate by one percentage point
- Check out the payoff for delaying your Social Security benefits
- Protect your family with life insurance
- Live below your means
I have to admit that lately my husband has also become interested in financial security. And, I am trying to remind him that in this life there is no such thing as security. We go with the flow with our day to day…. We go to work and could get into an accident and there goes all the security that we had – we can lose our job, lose a loved one, hear that we have cancer or a natural disaster takes away our home. How secure can we feel? Is there anyone in this world who hasn’t experienced any one of these insecurities? Or, is there any guarantee that any one of us won’t experience one of these events today, tomorrow or the day after tomorrow?
Instead let us do our best every day to earn an income and spend based on what we earn. Lets choose not to be a victim and make a conscious decision to focus on many other positive aspects of our life, which are priceless.
Here are the 7 points of 7 Treasures on financial security as I see it:
- Striving for security is a scarcity tactic.
- Don’t fall victim to the relentless search for financial security.
- Take calculated risks for better rewards.
- Learn to invest and make passive income like the richest.
- Count on your good health, good intentions and good people around you.
- Volunteer to help someone in need now and spend your time and energy
- Learn to love insecurity and enjoy life as an adventurous journey.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on the state of your financial security and what it means to you.
