Why you are unhappy at work?

  1. Bad boss
  2. Uncooperative co-workers
  3. Unsatisfying - routine job - with no rewards
  4. Over-worked & underpaid
  5. No working system or structure

These are the five major reasons why you are not happy with your job and what you do every day. If you are following my philosophy of happiness within, you already know that everything on this list is an outside source, and your limiting beliefs that you think is blocking your happiness at work. When in reality the reason is something else.

What is the real reason for your unhappiness at work?

You are unhappy within your own body with your spirituality, emotions and lifestyle.

90% of all unhappiness at work comes from your own self. When you are not happy within yourself, your relationships and your lifestyle, you bring your unhappiness to work. You might have bottled up all your negative emotions within yourself that only you know it's there. You might be stressed, rushed or unsatisfied with your time management or your own biological ticking time; You might be the person to take your food, exercise and sleep for granted and pushed yourself to the limit. If this is you, then all you need is one small trigger to turn your switch off and take you to the point of nervous break down. In general, you are sad, depressed, lack self-esteem, you feel guilty or shame, you have fears, you have taken too much responsibility, you are anxious and worried, You feel alone, and helpless and don't think that your actions makes any difference at all. You feel you are worthless and do worthless work.

10% of all unhappiness at work is situational and temporary. Someone loses temper and has fallen apart and cannot control their emotions to keep the peace at work. This situation is out of your control, and you can't help it but to observe the unhappy person or unhappy event and move on to continue your work.

How to be happy at work?

You can find happiness within yourself by aligning your body, mind and spirit through daily practice of meditation & gratitude, and by learning how to serve from your soul - in the capacity that you have right now, If you are serving from a capacity of a mom, then learn how to serve from your soul; if you are a chef, an office worker, a business owner, a doctor, a teacher or a nurse, learn how to serve from your soul.

It would be very easy and easy to change your perception of what you do and focus on what it is that you really serve. When I was stuck managing my own restaurant from 9 am to 9 pm and dealing with employees, equipment, image, sales, preparation, I was overwhelmed, depressed and unsatisfied. After years of schooling and working in an air conditioned, clean office, I found myself in hot and smelly kitchen chasing cockroaches and rats. Then something happened that changed my perception about my position as a cashier (although I owned the place) to someone who served food to hungry people. I found it very rewarding to come to work every day thinking, I am doing a great service by feeding the hungry, and I put all my focus and energy on being good at that. I served at that job for eight years.

If you find your job unfulfilling and unsatisfying, think again. Think of your end users and what is the benefit that they get from your service. I am sure that your perception about what you do and how you do it will change. It will re-energize you to serve from your soul.

When you found the service that matches your soul, you can be doing it all your life without feeling of doing any work at all. You might want to carry it on forever, Or, there might be a time that you feel the need to move on and find a better, larger capacity to serve from. This is very normal transition which is healthy for body, mind and spirit. You'll know when you have capped out in your current capacity to move on to the next.

In addition, you might want to following tips to find happiness at work:

  1. Choose to be happy no matter what goes on around you
  2. Find shared values with people you work with and make friends..
  3. Be a solution to a problem - when problems arise, ask how can I solve it?
  4. Adjust your expectations - people are living in their own world with their own agendas. They don't always meet your expectations.
  5. Let it go - move on
  6. Ask for it - speak up and ask for what makes you happy at work; if you are a valuable employee, you'll get what you want.
  7. Take responsibility for your decisions and never back down from serving from your soul. If you are asked to do something against your values, that is the time to look for another job.
